Welcome Note

The origin of the University of Dodoma School of Law may be traced to 2009, when the Bachelor of Laws (LL. B) program was run as a “Law Unit” under the Department of Development Studies (now the Institute of Development Studies-IDS) in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Dodoma. The first LL. B 100 students were admitted on 22nd October 2009. The School was constituted into a fully-fledged School of law in 2020 pursuant to institutional re-organization.

Since its establishment, the School has maintained a distinctive character in its contribution to the legal profession and the legal fraternity in Tanzania and is among the sources of legal knowledge and skills in the country. It has produced a number of alumni who comprise luminaries in various areas of law serving as magistrates, judges of high courts, senior members of government, and senior legal officers in Government offices, public corporations, local authorities, and private entities.  Others are law lecturers in many higher learning institutions both government and private. Indeed, the School of Law has played the role of mentoring lawyers and advocates in the country.

As it is the mission and vision of the University to become a center of excellence through research, consultancy, and teaching the school is committed to fulfilling the same.  So far, the School is composed of two administrative departments, Public Law and Private Law. Apart from the two departments, the School has a Legal Aid Clinic that offers legal services to the community.

Academically, the School is deeply committed to providing a transformative legal education to empower students to see the legal world differently and through an ethical legal lens they will challenge and change the status quo as agents of change.  Therefore, the School is dedicated to helping address national, and global legal needs by offering high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs that encourage high-quality legal education and distinguishing itself as a hub of legal scholarship with a strong foundation for training on basic legal concepts, legal advocacy, and legal research.

The School takes its commitment very seriously by making sure that all students at all levels are welcomed and supported as part of a community of learners. With guidance from staff with a diverse set of skills and academic backgrounds, the School is committed to helping build better, sustainable communities through the development of both undergraduates and graduates who make a difference in the legal fraternity.

The School offers degree courses leading to Bachelor of Laws (LL. B); Master of Laws (LL.M) and Ph.D. in Law. Students pursuing Bachelor of Laws degree are provided with a diverse and dynamic opportunity to acquire a wide range of legal knowledge and its related required theories and skills which focuses on practice to help them contribute to their professions and enrich their lives. Traditionally, the study of Law at the University level is of theoretical character; however, the School has introduced an informative measure to embolden vigorous participation in class and to familiarize mock trials and moot court competitions locally and internationally. Moot courtrooms at the School have been used to support this state-of-the-art. Also, the School runs a clinical program under which students are attached to courts in order for them to appreciate the workings of the law and gain practical experience.

At the postgraduate level, the School offers Master of Laws in Corporate Law, a Master of Laws in Human Rights, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Law degree. The main objective of our postgraduate programs is to impart specialised knowledge to the students. After completion, these graduates are expected to become legal experts in their areas of study.
