Legal Services Unit (STC)

About STC

The Legal Service Unit is under the Office of the Vice Chancellor mandated to vet legal documents before signed by the University. The office performs a variety of tasks aimed at providing independent legal advice to the Council, the Senate, the Vice-Chancellor and the Management and ensures they gain the legal advice and assurances required when requested in fulfilling their statutory and regulatory responsibilities. The office through the Secretary to Council is an active conduit for communication to members and other stakeholders by giving proper notice of upcoming meetings and timely distribution of materials such as agendas, meeting documents, and meeting minutes.

The legal office Unit performs further several functions including:

- To alert the Council if they believe that any proposed action would exceed the Council’s powers or be contrary to legislation.

- Ensuring that all documentation provided to members of the Council is concise and its content is appropriate.

- Providing adequate support to Council Committees.

- Maintaining the Register of the Interests of the members of the Council and of any other persons from whom the Council requires a statement of interests.

- Arranging an induction programme for new members of Council, and

- Arranging for the re-imbursement to Council members of the expenses they incur in carrying out Council business.
