Mr. Moses Joel Shimba
About Moses
I am an experienced biodiversity and environmental researcher and scientist with 10+ years of professional experience on diverse tropical terrestrial and marine environmental issues (mainly in East Africa (Tanzania, Zanzibar and Ethiopia), but also West and South Africa – Ghana, Benin, South Africa, and Mozambique). I am a researcher in the field of biodiversity conservation (ornithology, herpetology, mammology, wildlife and rangeland ecology, plants and animal taxonomy) for both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. I am also passionate about stream ecology, riparian/river ecology especially in using various aquatic biota (flora and fauna) in assessing the human influence in stream water and habitat quality. I have conducted more than 200+ mega environmental and ecological consultancy projects and some research in rivers which have been modified by the impacts of hydropower, agricultural activities and waste discharge (dump sites) and published some important findings. I have served as a Biodiversity and Wetland Specialist and Team Leader on most Biodiversity and Ecological Assessments as part of Environmental and Social Impact Assesments (ESIAs) related to deep sea oil and gas exploration, hydropower projects, mining, irrigation, and agriculture from 2011 to date. Research and teaching on biodiversity conservation, wildlife ecology and conservation, marine ecology, aquatic ecology, limnology, estuarine ecology, wetland and vernal pool assesment, river catchment assessment, environmental research and policy formulation, environmental management, environmental and biological impact assessments, environmental surveys, taxonomy of terrestrial and aquatic life and scientific editing continue to be core areas of work.
I am currently serving as a reviewer for the following international journals:
Limnologica Journal – Elsevier; International Journal of Biodiversity Conservation; African Journal of Biochemistry Research; the African Journal of Environmental Science and Technology and Global Journal of Earth and Environmental Science in the fields of terrestrial and aquatic ecology (fish, macroinvertebrates, phytoplankton, zooplankton, water quality, biomonitoring, animal/wildlife ecology, ornithology, herpetology, mammology, plant ecology, and animal and plant taxonomy).
