About Gervas
Dr. Gervas A. Kasiga is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Kiswahili, University of Dodoma, Tanzania. He holds a Ph.D. in Kiswahili (Literature), Masters in Kiswahili (Literature), and Bachelor’s degree in Fine and Performing Arts (Theatre Major). Before joined Kiswahili department - Literature section, he taught Film and Television courses for about seven years in the Department of Arts, Media, and Design (now Department of Arts and Media Studies) of the same university. Dr. Kasiga has a number of academic publications that focuses on Kiswahili Literature particularly in Kiswahili modern literature (Kiswahili Film & Soap Operas) and the Popular Kiswahili Music of Tanzania (Bongo Flavor). From his researches and papers, he argued the existence of a new branch of literature which emerged through the development of science and technology. He is a many-sided creative artiste (actor, screenwriter, film director, film producer, novelist, playwright, poet, drummer artist, just to mention few). He has an immense contribution in Tanzania film industry through several acting roles, screenwriting, film producing & directing, and several film-making trainings he conducted to artists. His popular films that he wrote and directed include Fake Pastors (2007), Unfortunate Love (2008), Ripple of Tears (2009), Distress in Zanzibar (2013), and Wende (2011). Furthermore, he wrote renowned Kiswahili television drama such as Dira (2003), Gharika (2005), and directed a series of special educational television drama skits for the 2010 General Election in Tanzania aired by the Tanzania Broadcasting Cooperation (TBC). His poems Pambazuko Toshelevu (2021) and Mama Afrika (2022) which he wrote, narrated, and produced them in audio-visual format are very popular in Tanzania radios and television stations. Again, his novel Kuona Bin Safari (2020) and a play Mwale wa Kandili (2022) are popular books in Tanzania literature market.
