THE UNIVERSITY OF DODOMA HOSTS HISTORIC ICRC IHL MOOTCOURT COMPETITION
The national round of the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) moot court competition recently concluded at the University of Dodoma, Tanzania, marking a significant milestone for the country's legal education landscape.
The University of Dodoma was privileged to be the host of this prestigious moot court competition which took place in Dodoma from 27th to 28th July 2023. Mr. Bart Vermerien, the Head of Mission at the ICRC's Dar es Salaam Office, was present at the competition and commended the University of Dodoma's achievements. The ICRC decided to honor UDOM with this competition due to its remarkable track record, having won the competition for three consecutive years since 2019, in 2022, the University emerged the African Winner in the All Africa IHL moot court competition, competing against universities from other African countries. This made UDOM the first Tanzanian university to secure such a victory since its establishment in 2001.
Eight universities participated in the competition, including the University of Dar es Salaam, Tumaini University Dar es Salaam College, Saint Augustine University (Mwanza), Saint Augustine (Arusha), the University of Iringa, Muslim University Morogoro, and Ruaha Catholic University. The University of Dar es Salaam claimed victory in this edition of the competition, as winners, they will represent Tanzania in the upcoming All Africa IHL moot court competition scheduled for October to November this year.
In his closing remarks, Prof. Lugano Kusiluka, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Dodoma, congratulated the University of Dar es Salaam for their triumph and encouraged them to strive for success in the forthcoming All Africa Competition. He emphasized that the responsibility extends beyond representing their university; they are now ambassadors for Tanzania. Prof. Kusiluka also extended his congratulations to all participating students and acknowledged the efforts of the School of Law at the University of Dodoma for co-organizing the successful event with the ICRC.
